Former NYPD Aide Files Lawsuit Against Mayor Eric Adams for Sexual Assault Allegations from 1993
A woman who worked as an administrative aide for the NYPD Transit Bureau in the 1990s has filed a lawsuit against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, accusing him of sexually assaulting her during that time. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in the New York County Supreme Court under the state’s Adult Survivors Act.
Plaintiff Alleges Adams Used Position to Demand Sexual Favors for Promotion
The plaintiff, who was passed over for promotions despite passing promotional exams and being told she was “next in line,” alleges that Adams, who at the time was a high-ranking member of the Guardians Association, a fraternal organization within the NYPD, used his position to proposition her. The suit claims that Adams offered to help her get a promotion if she would provide sexual favors.
Allegations of Sexual Assault in a Remote Location
According to the lawsuit, rather than driving the plaintiff home to Brooklyn as promised, Adams instead took her to a remote, vacant lot where he allegedly asked for oral sex and exposed himself to her. The plaintiff rebuffed all of Adams’ advances and was eventually dropped off at a Manhattan subway stop.
Denial of Allegations by Mayor Adams
Mayor Eric Adams has denied the allegations, stating in a statement through New York City Corporation Counsel Hon. Sylvia O. Hinds-Radix that he fully denies these “outrageous allegations and the events described here” and expects full vindication in court. Adams was a prominent public opponent of racism within the NYPD during this time, making it ludicrous for him to have had sway over promotions of civilian employees.
Charges and Counter-Allegations
The plaintiff is suing Adams for sexual assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and gender discrimination, among other charges. She is also suing the City of New York and the NYPD Transit Bureau for negligence. Adams has not been criminally charged in connection with these allegations.
Plaintiff’s Background in Legal Matters
The plaintiff, who has written a book on how to file lawsuits by representing yourself in court, filed this lawsuit with the help of a law firm. The plaintiff writes in her book description that she has spent years fighting in various courtrooms from small claims to the US Supreme Court.
Attorney’s Statement on Filing the Lawsuit
Megan Goddard, the attorney who filed the lawsuit, praised her client for her courage and determination to seek justice despite personal challenges. Goddard stated, “She knew that filing this lawsuit would cause her significant personal challenges but she did so nevertheless, because she believes sexual abusers must be held to account, no matter who they are.”
Mayor Adams’ Previous Response to Allegations
When the allegations first surfaced in November, a City Hall spokesperson stated that Adams did not know who the plaintiff was and could not recall ever meeting her. The mayor also denied any wrongdoing, stating that he would never physically harm another person.
